HOW IT WORKS

What Lessons Look Like

Say goodbye to boring lessons focused on declension and topics not relevant to real life. Get ready for fun lessons focused on getting you speaking ASAP with a clear progression plan to get you to a practical conversational level as efficiently as possible.

Get Conversational ASAP

The goal in our Czech classes is to get you conversational as fast as possible. And if that means leaving the horrors of declension to another day, then so be it! We focus on giving you the grammar and vocab you need to be conversational, and then focus on speaking "properly" later on.

Focus On What Matters

Say goodbye to filling out exercises on cases and other things that take up a lot of brain space but don't add much practical value. Our lessons leave out the things that are just about being technically correct, and focus on what is actually needed for real communication, leaving being perfect till later.

British Teacher Who Speaks Czech

Our Czech courses are taught by Jacob, who has been learning Czech since 2017 and is an expert on English and Czech grammar. While not a native speaker, Jacob speaks conversationally fluently and can help you reach the same level and ensure you avoid the mistakes he made when learning Czech!

Lots Of Revision & Correction

Czech's say that "revision is the mother of wisdom" and we strongly agree! In our lessons you will always revise things you've studied at least a few times, and won't move on to new topics until we're sure you actually understand and can use the things you've already learnt!

Made For English Speakers

As your teacher is British, all lessons are made for English speakers and show how Czech works differently from English, including differences in common phrases, how sentence structure works, and just how Czechs "think" in comparison to English.

Keep Your Lesson Notes

In all our classes, Jacob takes notes throughout the lesson of your mistakes (and how to fix them), new vocab and phrases, and notes of the new topic of the week. All these notes go into a shared Google Doc that you have access to, so you can see what you've learnt in each lesson!

Meet Your Teacher

All our courses are taught by our founder, Jacob, who has used our system to learn each Czech himself, and is an expert in taking complex topics and explaining them in clear terms for normal people.

Expert British Teacher

Jacob started teaching English in 2014, and has been learning Czech since 2017, during which time he learnt a lot about how to learn Czech - and how not to learn it! He has spent the last few years perfecting our Beginner Czech course with great explanations and examples to get you to a conversational level ASAP.

Speaks Czech & Spanish

By having a British teacher who speaks Czech you can look forward to everything being clearly explained from someone who has already learnt the language, while still getting the pronunciation and pro tips from a native Czech speaker in our included video courses.

Founder Of Top-Rated Language School

Jacob is the founder and ex-CEO of Speak Like Me, now the best-rated corporate language school in Prague, which was acquired in 2025, allowing Jacob to put all his time into making Languages With A Twist the best place in the world to learn languages!

12 Years Experience

Jacob has been teaching and learning languages since 2014, during which time he's taught everyone from grandmothers to CEO's, trained over a hundred teachers, written multiple grammar books, and come across all the issues and questions you'll likely have when trying to learn a language.

Our students say our courses

#make sense | #are awesome | #motivate me | #actually work | #make me laugh

Jacob is a skilled, clever teacher whose original methodology is effective for advancing quickly past A0. His lessons focus on useful vocab rather than the rote phrases you'd find in a textbook and never use. Would absolutely recommend for any level.
Lia berger
Studying Czech with Jacob has given me the encouragement and confidence to attempt to speak Czech from the very first week of our lessons. Jacob makes the lessons fun, engaging, and full of tips for practical application! I highly recommend the course!
Heather Barber
Jacob’s classes are fun and relaxed — no scary Czech grammar, just simple, clear explanations that help you start speaking fast. I've been learning Czech for over twenty years and only now can I say I feel confident in when to use perfective or imperfective verbs!

Frequently asked questions

Shouldn't I have a Czech person teach me Czech?

If you would prefer a Czech teacher, by all means go ahead and more power to you! There are however some benefits to having a British teacher who has already learnt Czech.

Firstly, Jacob knows what is hard and why it feels hard to people with English brains - and how to explain it in a way that makes sense to English speakers. Secondly, Jacob is a highly experienced teacher who is able to explain complex topics in a down-to-earth way that make sense. Lastly, as he has already learnt Czech, he can be quite sure that his method of teaching Czech works, as he's already used it on himself!

Also, to make sure you can trust the method and materials, and also get the native pronunciation, Jacob has partnered with a Czech native speaker to co-produce our video courses and podcast. They also check every single bit of Czech content we produce to make sure it's accurate.

While Jacob's Czech is not perfect, it would be perfect if declension didn't exist. His vocabulary is very advanced, knowledge of English and Czech grammar is top-notch, and perhaps more importantly the system of learning is fun, effective, and has a clear start-to-finish path to get you to a conversational level in Czech.

If you're not sure if you would rather have lessons with Jacob or a Czech teacher, simply try a trial lesson, and if you don't like it, the lesson is free!

Do you have trial lessons for group classes?

We run special "free lesson days" multiple times throughout the year where you can come and try a lesson for free - sign up to our newsletter to get information about when these are happening. You can also see what our group classes look like in our full-length videos of group classes on our YouTube channel.

We do not have the option to join an existing group for a trial lesson. This means when you book a course you will not ever have random trial students joining your lessons - you will always be with your mini group of maximum 5 students which we think leads to a more comfortable atmosphere in classes.

Are individual class trial lessons free?

For our 6 and 12 individual lesson packages we offer trial lessons. If you have the trial lesson and like the class and decide to buy a package, that trial lesson counts as your first paid lesson from the package. If you don't like the lesson and don't want to buy a package then the trial lesson is free!

How do cancellations work?

Individual Classes

If you are unable to attend your regular lesson time (which is agreed on before paying for the classes), you’re very welcome to contact Jacob to see if it’s possible to reschedule. While we’ll always do our best to help, alternative times can’t be guaranteed. If no suitable availability is possible, the lesson will be lost.

Pair Classes

The same as individual classes - if both students aren't able to make the usual time you can try to rearrange the class with Jacob. If no rearrangement is possible the lesson will be lost.

If just one student comes to class the other student simply misses out on the class.

Group Classes

If you miss a group class you simply lose the lesson. We do not offer the option to join another group to make up for the lost lesson.

How does paying for lessons work?

Once you choose a lesson package and agree on a lesson time you will receive an invoice with a QR payment link for the full lesson package. All lesson packages are paid for in full up front.

We do not offer the option to pay in instalments or monthly.

Where do in-person classes take place?

In-person classes take place in our modern office in the centre of Prague (next to Můstek metro station). Individual lessons can also take place at a pre-arranged place in central Prague (potential extra travel fee for longer travel).

How do online classes work?

Our online classes take place on Google Meet. After buying a package and choosing a lesson time you will receive a weekly calendar event which contains the link to the lesson - there's nothing for you to do as the event will show up in your calendar automatically! We also put the link to the Google Doc for your lesson notes in the same event!

Do you do exam preparation?

No. Our courses are based on improving your real-life communication skills as fast as possible. For exam preparation we recommend you find a teacher or school that specialises in such exams. If you're interested in real-life improvements in lessons that get straight to the point then we recommend learning with us!

Do you also have 90min individual lessons?

Jacob's individual classes are organised into 60min blocks in order to keep simple scheduling, but for special cases we can arrange 90min classes if it works with the schedule. 90min classes are simple 1.5x the cost of 60min classes.

Do you teach children?

No. Our courses are designed for adults and we have no classes for children or plans to teach children in the future.

Do you teach in-company classes too?

We offer in-company classes on a case-by-case basis, with customised prices based on number of students, location and lesson type.

I paid for a package but now I'm going on holiday

If you buy an individual lesson package and then go on holiday we can offer you online lessons while you're on holiday at the same lesson time. If you bought a group package you will lose those lessons.

Do the stated prices include VAT/DPH?

Languages With A Twist is not a VAT-payer, so the stated prices are the final prices you pay, with no extra taxes or VAT added to the invoice.

Can I get an invoice for the lessons (and can I pay for them through my company)?

Yes - in fact all students receive an invoice for their lessons.

If you want to pay for lessons through your company that is fine - just give us the company details to add to the invoice.

Can I pay through benefits points?

Not currently.

How good is Jacob's Czech?

Jacob has been learning Czech for ten years and is often complimented by Czechs on his level. If declension didn't exist his level would be advanced. As declension exists, he makes a lot of declension mistakes but has a practically fluent level for day to day communication.
